Kobudo at Shukokai Karate Cranbourne is offered alongside regular karate training for students who want to go deeper into the traditional Japanese martial arts. The bo (long staff), sai (three-pronged trident), and tonfa (side-handled baton) are traditional Okinawan weapons with a rich history in the Shukokai tradition. Students who study Kobudo gain a deeper understanding of distance, timing, and technique that complements their karate. This program is exclusive to Cranbourne โ€” you won't find it at any other Shukokai location in Melbourne. Available to students who have established a foundation in regular karate training.

Bo Staff (Rokushakubo)

The bo is a 6-foot wooden staff and one of the most fundamental weapons in Kobudo. Training with the bo develops reach, footwork, and an understanding of distance and angles that directly improves your karate.

Sai

The sai is a three-pronged metal weapon with origins in Okinawa. Sai training develops close-range technique, strength in the forearms and wrists, and a deep appreciation for the precision of traditional martial arts.

Tonfa

The tonfa is a side-handled baton used across several traditional martial arts. Training with the tonfa builds coordination, quick reflexes, and blocking skills that translate back into empty-hand karate.

Why Cranbourne Students Love Kobudo

Rich Tradition

Trained Instructors

Our instructors teach Kobudo as part of the same Shukokai tradition as our karate โ€” with proper lineage and technique, not as a novelty.
