About Our Dojo

Shogokan Karate Cranbourne was established in 2005 and has grown from a small 80m² training space into a 325m²+ state-of-the-art purpose-built dojo at 54 Industrial Circuit, Cranbourne West — one of the finest karate facilities in the region.

The Cranbourne dojo is the home of the Shogokan Karate Dojos organisation — the chief instructors’ base, and the flagship of the network. Students come from Cranbourne, Cranbourne West, Clyde, Clyde North, Berwick, and surrounding communities.

We run programs for every age from 4 years through to adults. Whether your child is taking their first steps in martial arts or you’re an adult looking to get fit, build confidence, and learn a genuine self-defence skill — there’s a class here for you.

Your Instructors

Sensei Darryl Thornton

5th Dan Black Belt — Head Instructor, Shogokan Karate Dojos

Sensei Darryl Thornton has dedicated more than 20 years to the study and practice of Shito-ryu Shukokai Karate, earning the rank of 5th Dan Black Belt through years of disciplined training and instruction. He has also earned the respected Japanese teaching titles of Shidoin and Renshi by Sensei Ishitobi, World Chief Instructor of Ishitobi-Ha Shitoryu Shukokai Karate.

Committed to continually deepening his knowledge and skills, Sensei Darryl regularly travels to Kobe, Japan to train directly under Sensei Ishitobi. Through these experiences, he maintains a strong connection to the traditional roots and values of Japanese karate. He also leads student tours to Japan, providing opportunities for students to immerse themselves in authentic dojo training while experiencing the rich culture and traditions Japan has to offer.

At the heart of Sensei Darryl’s teaching philosophy is the belief that karate is for everyone. Under his leadership, Shogokan Karate Dojos has grown to six locations — a welcoming, family-friendly environment where students of all ages and abilities can train together, build confidence, develop discipline, and become part of a supportive community.

The Style: Shitoryu Shukokai Karate

We teach Shukokai Karate — a traditional Japanese karate style known for its powerful, explosive technique and emphasis on practical application. The style was developed by Sensei Tani in Japan and is maintained through a direct lineage to the Shito-ryu Shukokai Union.

Students learn the complete art: kata (forms), kihon (basic techniques), and kumite (sparring). Unlike many modern martial arts schools, Shogokan teaches something real — students who train here know the difference.

Affiliations

Shogokan Karate Dojos is affiliated with the Ishitobi-Ha Shitoryu Shukokai Karate Do Union — the international governing body for our style of karate.
